By Athena Grayson
Genre: Sci-fi dystopian with romantic elements

Blurb:
Nothing infuriates Princess Ione Ra more than having someone else take control of her reputation from her, and her old nemesis–gossip journalist Jaris Pulne–is poised to do just that with pilfered pics of her caught in a compromising position with her power-couple partner. As someone who’s no stranger to manipulating the markets on her own social life, Ione knows the wrong scandal means social suicide.

For the other half of the power couple, Den Hades, his survival has depended on staying in his powerful father’s shadow in order to protect his secrets. But on the very night of his one chance to earn a shot at becoming a Scion–and freedom from his father’s ambitions, scandal threatens to tear him from Ione, or worse–force them together before their time.

Damage control turns into danger when their attempts to retrieve the images lead them both into the dark underbelly of the glittering city-planet, exposing secrets of both friends and foes that could lead to more than just social suicide.

Excerpt Fool’s Gambit
©2016 Athena Grayson
Denaat Hades held his blade extended, his arm outstretched. He held the lunge on one burning thigh muscle while he stood in near-complete darkness, waiting for the spectacle to begin. The landscape of the party had given way to the evening’s main event—an exhibition duel and bladework demonstration between himself and the Academy’s Blademaster with a twenty-five year record.
Gone were the ornamental topiary plantings that created nooks and alcoves for socializing, and gone was the impressive display of fine foods and the waterfall made from champ-ale bubbling and fizzing over cut-crystal held under pressurized glass until it burst out of the pursed lips of a crystal nymph into glasses for guests. They’d been discreetly cleared away for anti-gravity pods holding comfortable seating for up to a dozen guests. The pods jockeyed for position along x, y, and z axes based on the credit amounts donated by their occupants, except for the single, stationary pod holding his instructors and closest classmates, fixed to the floor at the edge of the ring of drones generating the light field for the dueling area.
Gone also was his shiny, holo-patterned suit and the starsilk shirt beneath it, and the ornamental lights in his hair. His finery—picked out by his class’s style consultant to display his status and wealth—was stuffed into a storage container in favor of light, form-fitting carbon-fiber armor, with a matching face mask. Gauntlets secured to his wrists generated power for the sensors emitting an electro-mesh shield around his body that shifted with the movements of his off hand. His weapon, an elegant blade of wire and light, derived its power from his main hand gauntlet and the glove that protected his hand. Tuned to full, the blade could melt steel or puncture the transparent alloy that made up the dome above his head.
Thankfully, this was an exhibition duel. The blades would sting, but not incapacitate or kill.
He waited, holding his ready position, as the banners came down, displaying his family’s banner, with the twinkling ribbons of support from classmates and other interested parties, and the Academy banner, under which Master Kenndar dueled. Tradition kept the Academy banner free of ribbons, but his neural interface told him the odds of his loss were just under fifty percent. The markets were calling this a close thing and the players in the markets were nothing, if not savvy odds-players.
The lights came up around the ring, plunging the shifting observation cars into darkness as Master Kenndar entered from the other side of the oval. He took his cue to step forward, meeting his opponent in the center of the ring. He executed the formal bow, hand-grip, and blade salute deserving of a worthy opponent and prayed his master’s teachings weren’t wasted. He returned to his ready position to await the chime beginning the match, but not before he glanced towards the stationary box and spotted her in the front row, the lights in her hair twinkling in time with the flashes of crystal on her dress.
Ione wore a small smile of bored amusement, echoing the expressions of probably everyone in the audience, and he knew their thoughts. Yet another Academy student, ready to show off for status and praise, as if the privileges of his born position didn’t already come with their own accolades. His gaze flicked to the VIP box and he saw another bored, slightly amused expression, only he knew this one masked keen interest. As if the man sensed his scrutiny, Invicti Hades lifted one eyebrow and Den heard the words as surely as if they’d been broadcast for all to hear. What new way have you found to disappoint me?
The lurking paranoia he’d lived with for ten years summoned itself to the forefront of his awareness as the lights in the arena changed to a soft blue. The chimes sounded for Ready and Arm, and his blade flared to golden life. Across the ring, Master Kenndar assumed his own ready position. Den felt the eyes of the spectators crawling over him, adding weight to his protective gear. Waiting for him to fail.
The last chime sounded. Engage!
He leapt forward, his awareness extended out to the blade’s end, as he’d been taught and trained by Kenndar to do for ten years. And knew he’d made a mistake.

Series Blurb for Scions of the Star Empire:

They can have anything they want…except a future.

The children of Landfall’s powerful nobility have all the wealth and privilege of their family status, but there’s only one thing that will give them true freedom–the title of Scion. The only way to earn it is by carefully managing the social influence markets that rank them according to their accomplishments. At the exclusive Landfall Cultural Academy, the heirs compete to elevate their status high enough for the Cultural Trust to grant them the title and the freedom to make their own way, and scandal is as good as scholarship.

About the Author:
Athena Grayson likes kickass heroines, big-brained and sexy beta heroes who aren’t afraid of strong women or their own feelings, and stories that turn the genre tropes sideways. If you’re looking for something a little unexpected, a little more, and a lot of fun…this is your kinda place.

Synopsis

What’s the recipe to the ultimate disaster week?

Three unruly friends.
A wedding we shouldn’t have been invited to.
Two unexpected romances.
A scoop of sexy.
And a double scoop of chaos.

Lydia is a good girl who is above revenge. Good thing she has us. No one cheats on our best friend and rides off into the sunset with his new bride.

What was supposed to happen? Unleash hell like two badasses. It was a simple plan, but we failed to anticipate a few things. A rogue prosthetic, an accidental exorcism, and dominatrix strippers willing to take things way too far, just to name a few.

What actually happened? As usual, nothing went as planned, especially when two sexy distractions popped into the mix. We were there to avenge our friend, not to get entangled with two cocky, arrogant men, who don’t like to hear the word no. I was sure we could resist.

I mean, it was only a week, right? What could happen in a week?

Not intrigued enough? There’s totally a duck in this story.

Ah yeah. Now we have your undivided attention. Enjoy our chaos.

An Introduction to Book Besties Author, Kelly Cain

Book Besties

One day I decided to sit down and write a book. I’d never thought about writing before, didn’t even really like it all that much. I was a business major in college, only taking the requisite English and literature classes required for graduation. Sure, I wrote essays, term papers, book reports, and the like. Not fun, although I didn’t mind the book reports so much. Those allowed me to read. Now there’s something I really did like to do. I read during car rides, sitting by the pool, waiting for class, waiting on a mall bench while my friends shopped – you get the idea. After years of reading, I decided I could write. I sat down and started, and six weeks later I’d written the first draft for my debut novel, Altered. A few months after what I considered editing (removing/correcting erroneous punctuation and grammar), I sent it…

She’s determined to find the poor woman’s killer too. Review > Time Out (Book 3 of the Irving University series) by Jim Cangany

 Time Out by Jim Cangany
Time Out
by Jim Cangany (Goodreads Author)

4-stars

Read from June 01 to 06, 2016 — I own a copy

Time Out is the third book in the Irving University series and although I have read the previous two (see my reviews here and here), I believe this could be read as a standalone. There are characters from the other books, but the author does a great job giving enough background to catch you up to speed quickly.

The main character, Karen, is a middle-grade teacher and basketball coach, not unlike her older brother, Greg, who coaches women’s basketball at fictional Irving University. She was once a promising player until her ulcerative colitis got in her way. She isn’t bitter about it, but chooses to use her gifts however she can. She is laid off from her teaching job at the end of the term, so Greg is able to get her a temporary job at Irving running the girls basketball camp over the summer. He also secures her temporary housing. Enter her landlord and neighbor, Terry, and his energetic daughter, Hanna. Hanna, a middle-grade student who wants to play basketball, makes instant friends with Karen who becomes a big help for Terry, a single father who’s struggling to make ends meet.

I’ve mentioned before (probably in my other Irving reviews) that I’m not big on sweet romance. However when reading this series, I never feel like I’m missing out on something. The author does a great job of giving us the satisfying romance. He also shows us a different slice of life we may not be familiar with. Terry’s mom is Native American and we learn some new things in that area. He’s in building construction and a single dad – again we can feel what that likes from his perspective. Karen has a condition I’d not heard much about before, and now I know so much more. The author does not shy aware from racial issues and prejudice, however I do believe he lets Marie off the hook a little easily (you’ll have to read to know what I’m referring to).

Overall, another very solid offering from Jim Cangany which I enjoyed very much. It was a little lighter on the sports this time, but of course it was still running in the background. I would recommend to anyone who likes romance, especially on the sweet side.

 Take Two by Jim Cangany
Take Two (Irving University, #2)
by Jim Cangany (Goodreads Author)

4-stars

Read from April 07 to 24, 2016

I read the first book in this series, and mistakenly thought the second book would be about the male main character’s sister (that’s book three which I’m looking forward to). When I found out it was about the female main character’s best friend, I internally groaned. I barely tolerated Ciara, and mostly disliked her because she was always listening to her mean best friend. I couldn’t imagine sitting through a whole book about this woman.

Whelp, I think I may like this one more than the first. There’s a little backstory, of course, which has shaped Marie into the woman she is and how she presents herself to the world. I think what makes her more likeable is how Cangany brilliantly gives us a nemesis we really dislike. Helen is reprehensible and sadly, believable, because I’ve personally experienced people like her.

The love interest is quite likable, attentive, hot, and everything a love interest should be. He has an interesting job and reason for being on campus which was fun to follow. Sports is truly my life, but I don’t usually follow triathlons (nor triathletes), but that angle was never boring.

And to really knock it out of the park for me… not one, but TWO Jason Mraz song references. Enough said.

Drawn to Her by Jenna Harte
Drawn to Her (Southern Heat Book 1)
by Jenna Harte (Goodreads Author)

4 stars
Read from March 13 to 16, 2016

I really liked this book. I don’t often read straight romance, but I really liked it.

The heroine was petite and spunky, a nurse – not someone I can identify with at all (being super tall and introverted). However, I liked her and wanted her to have her guy even though she wasn’t entirely sure she wanted him.

As for the guy, when I read the synopsis, I wasn’t sure he’d be my type since I’m more of a beta hero type of girl. He has everything in world except the love of family, and that definitely made me want to root for him.

When they come together, it’s truly an opposites attract situation, but the attraction felt very natural. I really love them together and I hope they’re the main characters in the remaining books of this Southern Heat series. I want to read more of their story.

This was an easy read, and with summer coming soon, definitely pick this up for a beach read or to enjoy on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

This morning I was laying out my plan today for a friend - work (day job) then continue reading a good friend's #ms. It's the first day in the last 5-1/2 weeks that I haven't planned to write because... 🥁 I finished my #wip yesterday. That's right folks, Essence of Fire and Spice is done. Now I'll let it sit for a bit and get feedback from my #critiquepartners then do the first revision. 📚 What are your hump day plans? 📚 . . . . . . . . . . . . #writerslife #nanowrimo #authorsofinsta #authorsofcolor
Packed and ready to go. Too bad my flight was canceled. The bad news is that I lose a day visiting family however the good news is I have a whole free day to write. 😉 📚 Are you more a glass-half-empty or glass-half-full-type of person?
Sooooo last night instead of drafting the story I'm already more than half way through and have been making good progress on this week, I spent the evening creating character sketches for a new story @amandalinsmeier gave me the idea for. Darn you, Amanda.
Whole wheat croissants are rising in the oven, then I'm off to play a few holes of disc golf, and later... writing. I wrote a couple of chapters Friday and was surprised to slide back into my ms so easily after vacation. 📚 What are your Sunday plans?
I tried to capture Italia in my breakfast today. While there, I had lots of fruit and an omelet with salmon, artichokes, and brie each morning. Not quite the same, but when I closed my eyes, I could almost hear the Tyrrhenian Sea.
I'm in Amsterdam in case you haven't checked out my stories and check-ins. I'm staying very near to where my great-grandmother grew up and I think that's pretty neat. Also... I'm having a blasty blast.
I'm going to enjoy my seafood stuffed portabello then get back to work on querying. I only have a few more to send so hope to be done by Wednesday. Then back to drafting. Can't wait. 📚 Happy Monday! What are your plans for the week? 📚
I've had a couple of harsh over-the-top weeks on the day job but I'm officially free-ish. 📚 Tomorrow I go back to the dreaded synopsis and then some querying, but tonight I celebrate my reprieve. 📚 TGIF everyone!
It feels like forever since I've made green chili. So yummy and comforting. 📚 Lurking in the background is my faithful laptop. The good news is I finished my revisions last night. The bad news is I have to write a synopsis today. Nothing I loathe more I think. The thing is... I've already written one but now that I've learned more about them, I definitely need to start over. 📚 What's your comfort food?
I haven't had a lot of time to revise since Thursday, but last night I carved out some time before bed. I'm feeling much better about getting this done soon and out for query. I'm looking forward for Faith and Andrew's story to go out into the world. 📚 Have a loving week! 📚
I'm just sitting down for my first cup of coffee of the day and beginning the day's revision work. I've had a lot of errands and distractions this morning so tomorrow I'm going to wake up and head straight to the coffee shop to get some good quality writing time in. 📚 Do you read / write better at home or out somewhere? 📚
This is my RWA conference haul. Most are signed and if you saw my stories, that's where I got to meet Alyssa Cole who I admire so much. I was pretty much speechless and I'm sure she thought something was wrong with me, but she was gracious nonetheless. Another standout was Alisha Rai whose Forbidden Hearts series I really enjoyed. She was soooooo kind and engaging. An author who I'd heard good things about but haven't read yet is Mia Sosa. Again so nice (and she complimented my hair eep lol) so I can't wait to read her. 📚 Happy Friday! Are any of these on your #TBR or have you read any? 📚
